This course is designed to acquaint students with various research methodologies and to enable students to design and develop data collection plans and data gathering instruments that can be used in ongoing workplace practice. The course emphasizes the use of qualitative methods in the context of conducting and interpreting research. Upon completion of this course, students will have gained the ability to identify issues in organizations that benefit from qualitative research analysis; locate and evaluate relevant literature from the disciplines of sociology and business organization; design data collection tools; develop a cultural description; and apply those skills in organizational settings. Students are expected to experience fieldwork in a cultural system in which they are seen as a "foreign” observer. Using a variety of methodologies, they will collect cultural data and present their results in a final paper. The study is also conducted with a concern for organizational issues. Understanding the research process gives students critical information-gathering skills that can be useful in making effective leadership decisions.
